“OCGS Completes Database to Research Obituaries” – Site gives access to 58,00 names” was the headline in today’s Okmulgee Times newspaper.
The paper ran an article announcing the roll out by the Okmulgee County Genealogical Society of a 58,000+ names obituary index. This gives the ability to find obituaries published in the Okmulgee Times, and preceding papers, all the way back to the 1920s. Copies of these papers are kept on microfilm at the Okmulgee Public Library.
The obituary index allows researchers to lookup the publishing date for deceased loved ones. You can look up by last name or can narrow the search by adding the first name. Once you have a date you can order a copy of the obituary or notice through the OCGS website, for only $3, or if you live nearby you can drop by the Okmulgee Public Library and get a printout for only 10 cents!
The Okmulgee Times Death Notices and Obituary Index is unique in its content and the online version is the latest incarnation of a decades long effort by volunteers to save access to this valuable genealogical research information.
The free service is the first of several planned databases to be placed on our website at www.okmcgs.com. These databases will primarily focus on records and documents relating to Okmulgee County.
